The Story

ROBERT KNOKE: BLACK MATERIAL

BLACK MATERIAL, Robert Knoke’s first monograph, serves as an overview of THE PORTRAIT SERIES; a collection of black-and-white mixed media drawings featuring a range of subjects from musicians and artists to writers, actors and fashion icons, including a roster of some of the most influential people shaping contemporary culture, among them Jamie Hince (The Kills), Thomas Hirschhorn, Marc Jacobs, Terence Koh, Bruce LaBruce, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Alison Mosshart (The Kills), Gareth Pugh, Patti Smith, Casey Spooner, Lawrence Weiner and Olivier Zahm.

Collectively these drawings become more a portrait of Robert than of the individuals that people them. It is his curation and the fantasy - Casey Spooner

Knoke’s work has been exhibited at galleries, cultural Institutions and club venues such as Artnews Projects and Apartment Gallery in Berlin, as well as Ruff Club, Seven and NP Contemporary Art Center in New York. He has also mounted site-specific installations at Face Gallery in Seoul and at The New Museum in New York. Recent solo exhibitions include shows at Teapot Gallery in Cologne and Envoy Enterprises in New York.

BLACK MATERIAL was launched in 2010 with a site-specific installation at The New Museum. The book is being re-issued in conjunction with NOW, Robert Knoke’s second solo exhibition in New York, opens at ENVOY ENTERPRISES on April 25, 2013.
